AFROPUFF SERIES (CHILDRENS FICTION)
Afropuff Girls The Afropuffs series tells the story of two fourth-grade girls, Makeba and Zora, who live with their mothers on a large college campus in the Midwest. When their mothers, both busy professors, are unable to take them to scheduled Girl Scout troop meetings, the girls instead join the anthropology students' Culture Club, a college group for which Makeba's mother serves as faculty advisor. As young apprentices to the college students, the girls learn about different cultures, and are encouraged to do their own field research. What better place to do this than on a college campus where a vast diversity of family stories, nationalities, and cultures coexist?
LIONESS OF LISABI (FILM)
Lioness of Lisa The patriarchal world view of society has often deprived women of equality in the social, political, intellectual and entrepreneurial domain. This is particularly evident in the treatment of the lives of women of African descent who have been acknowledged as tradition bearers, nurturers, and mothers, but seldom as engineers of thoughtful and necessary social change. The adventure and contributions of women of African descent as instigators of social and political change is exemplified in the life of Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti as she confronted deep rooted tradition, colonialism, imperialism, and religion in a society that was embattled by these controlling but often conflicting forces. Appropriately, she became known as "the Lioness of Lisabi," an indication of the power she wielded and the respect that the local community of Abeokuta and beyond gave her. Lioness of Lisabi is an animated musical about the life of Funmi Ransome-Kuti. This fictional account captures Funmi's coming of age and her dramatic arrival at the threshold of leadership. Set in the small busy Western Nigerian town of Abeokuta during the 1920s, it is an eloquent, entertaining, and enlightening celebration of a forgotten heroine in a fictional yet to a large extent, factual and contemporary style. It is designed to interest the mature minded and also to inspire, instruct, and illuminate the minds and lives of children. Notably, Funmilayo was the mother and mentor of the legendary afro-beat creator and political performer, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti. It is therefore appropriate to use an afro-beat musical theme as the backdrop for this film.
